Obituary: IHM Pusa Principal Alok Shivapuri passes away

Alok Shivpuri, Principal of Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi passed away in Delhi after brief period of hospitalisation for suspected swine flu. A hotelier-turned-academician, Shivpuri was a respected face in the hospitality education in the country and has played a key role in upgrading IHM Pusa into premier hospitality institute in the country.  

After graduating from IHM Pusa, he joined as Management Trainee in Hotel Corporation of India Group of Hotels. He became one of the youngest principal to join Food Craft Institute, Chandigarh, at the age of 35. He later joined the Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi, in 2003 as Principal.

As a principal of premier hospitality institute in the country, he has started innovative programmes as well as in driving the skilling programme of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India in a dedicated manner.  

Under his mentorship, IHM Pusa won many national accolades as best hotel management and catering institute in the country consistently.

Remembering Shivpuri as a “humble human being”, Chef Davinder Kumar, Vice President – F&B, Le Meridien Hotel New Delhi and President of Indian Culinary Forum (ICF), said that, Shivpuri was known in the industry for his “supportive nature”, and “administrative skills”. “In Shivpuri’s death, the industry has lost a great leader and a humble human being.”

“We have lost one of the best educator and administrator,” remembered Anil Bhandari, former CMD of ITDC.  It was during his tenure as Principal, the institute has grown to its potential and glory, Bhandari added.  As an educator he was a great mentor for students  and involved them in research activities and assignments related to airports, culinary, hospitals and other service sectors. 

Dr JK Managaraj, Principal, IHM Ahmedabad expressing his deepest condolence, said that Shivpuri was a dedicated administrator who brought IHM Pusa to great heights as a disciplined institute in the country. “We lost a great educationist and an equally good administrator in Shivpuri,” he added.

Chef Vivek Sagar, Consultant, THSC remembered Shivpuri as a “dynamic personality” who always stood for the cause of education and skilling in the country, and went out of the way to help everyone who strived for this cause. “He was a great help when I approached him for support for India Skills Competition, to conduct competition and also to provide equipment, volunteers, etc. when we conducted competition in Pragati Maidan free of charge,” he said.  “He was a visionary academician and a very good administrator,” he added.
