Hospitality’s Next Frontier - OPH

Monday, July 8, 2019, 14:33 Hrs  [IST]

Good Morning!
Today is the 1st of July, 2069, and I am your personal Digibot D-204 named after your cabin in Ocean Platform Hotel (OPH) Koli, in Mumbai’s Marve Bay. The OPHs are a natural evolution of the world-wide Green Shirts Movement which despised ostentatious luxury as eco-folly and promoted the re-discovery of the oceans as environmental sanity. Star Ratings for land-based hotels have been substituted by Leaf Ratings for OPHs. We are a Five Leaf OPH.

In conformity with our eco-rating, we are self-sufficient in our energy needs. Our Generator Buoys tap wave and tidal power. These are augmented by windmills, solar power and bio-gas. All our waste is re-cycled and we export some energy and waste by-products to the mainland to meet our limited needs of externally produced products.

You have chosen the basic package which includes occupancy rent and the standard energy-based consumption as specified by the National Resources Index for your Citizenship Level as indicated in your Unique Identification Card. You will be billed for the additional consumption of any facility based on its Energy Level of Production (ELP).

The OPH is built on many decks with the first number in your cabin’s identity indicating its deck. Deck 1 is the Bridge and not accessible to guests. Deck 4 is sub-surface with only one area open to unescorted guests. As you have probably noticed, your OPH has garden walls. The bio-engineered Spider Grass on these Hanging Gardens cools, humidifies, purifies and circulates the air on board the same way that a forest does. We do not use artificial air-conditioning. We also do not draw on farm, field, forest or aquatic life as raw-materials for the preparation of our food. It is all produced in our Bio-tech Laboratories with flavours and textures generated on board and added to suit your tastes. As a result of this, our adopted land-based wildernesses have been regenerated and drawn international acclaim.

As you walk down our corridors you will notice that they are always illuminated: this is because we employ bio-luminescence. It is similar to the glow produced by deep-sea creatures also using the chemical luciferin acting on the enzyme luciferase. This, incidentally, is how fireflies and glow-worms, glow.

Your cabin has a Communication Wall. It is both scenic and interactive. On your request I can programme it to project any of 64 living panoramas. It can also display any of the facilities offered by our OPH.

If you opt for the all-inclusive tariff, then the meals served to you will conform to the 182 menus served to you through your Room Service Unit. Should you opt for an a la carte dish from our Dining Room, please note that the size of the room will vary with the number of guests present. This is to conserve energy.

I am at your personal service 24x7. In the unlikely event that I should malfunction, my replacement will be in place in 5 minutes. We speak 16 languages and if we cannot answer any of your questions, the Information Panel in you wall-screen will be activated.

We have created our own Marine Park and Coral Banks. You can view them from our Submarine Deck 4. Our Scuba Team engages in fish feeding at specified times depending on oceanic conditions. You can also sign on for the appropriate scuba-diving lessons depending on your capability and interest. Our researchers are working with a pod of wild dolphins and we hope to be able to convince these highly intelligent mammals to partner with us in submarine exploration. We understand that their reluctance is based on a conviction that human being are compulsive polluters of the environment.

Our dolphin friends seem impressed by the fact that, all the appropriate waste produced in our OPH is recycled as vermi-compost and used in our on-board vegetable gardens. Fresh water is produced by reverse osmosis and solar distillation; we also harvest rain water. They have also appreciated the fact that there is a small charge for adults who wish to join a tour of these areas after clearance by our anti-contamination team. Children can view tours on their cabin-screens or in public areas.

I now wish you a most rewarding eco-experience.
