In an ambitious project intended at both cleaning up the current mess as well as shortage of human resource in relation to tourist guides across the country, Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India will launch online certification program for Tourist Facilitators soon. According to Meenakshi Sharma, Director General- Tourism, Govt of India the Ministry is all set to roll out the program by streaming the first module in the New Year itself. The government will organise a "handholding" workshop for all stakeholders to take them along and make the initiative a success. Sharma was speaking at the 8th Update and Outlook Meeting of PATA India in Delhi.

There will be different modules that one has to go through starting from the basic certification to get certified as a Tourist Facilitator. There will be Advanced programme with specialisation in Heritage and Adventure as well as a Spoken Language module. The government has fixed an entry fee of INR 2000 for people to register to get into the program to get certified.

By removing the archival Licence Raj that existed in the system so far, the government wants to create a e-market place of certified Facilitators to help tourists to engage as per their location and demand.

' If a Harward MBA can be obtained by sitting at home, why not tourist guide certification?' asked Sharma

The govt expects to certify at least 3000 Tourism Facilitators in the first year itself.
