Aditya Birla Retail mulls foray into ‘cash & carry’ business

Aditya Birla Retail is planning to expand in to the ‘cash and carry’ business. The move is part of its strategy to have a 360-degree presence in the retail sector. It is already present in hyper and super market formats. After opening more than 700 small stores, Aditya Birla, one of India’s leading business conglomerates, is now literally thinking more in terms of size as well as consumer base.

It is planning to start its own wholesale cash and carry operations in the next two years. By doing so, Birla will be the first Indian retailer ever to get into wholesale trading.

Thomas Varghese, CEO, Birla Retail said, “It is an interesting corollary to our existing business. We will enter this business not next year, but a year later than that and we think it will help in sourcing goods not just for hypermarket, but other formats as well.

When it happens, Birla will join the likes of not only existing retailers like Walmart and Metro, but also newer players like Carrefour and Tesco that are planning to start their cash and carry operations in India very soon.

With plans to open as many as 75 hypermarkets and reach 1,000 small stores mark in few years, analysts feel that the timing for this new format couldn't be better.
