In a significant move to boost tourism and preserve cultural heritage, the Tripura government has signed a lease agreement with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), a Tata Group subsidiary, to develop the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala into a five-star luxury hotel named ‘Taj Pushpabanta Palace’.
Constructed in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the Pushpabanta Palace served as the Raj Bhavan until 2018. The redevelopment project, estimated at INR250 crore, will encompass 104 rooms, including four regal suites within the restored palace, and modern accommodations built adjacent to the heritage structure.
Under the agreement, IHCL will receive a 30% capital investment subsidy, capped at INR40 crore, and a 100% GST reimbursement up to INR250 crore over 15 years. The project is expected to generate over 200 direct jobs, with a focus on hiring local talent.
Initially met with opposition from the Tipra Motha Party, concerns were addressed through assurances of preserving the palace’s dignity and investing in hospitality training for tribal youth.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha hailed the initiative as a milestone for Tripura, aiming to attract global tourists and showcase the state’s royal legacy.
