In response to growing customer dissatisfaction, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced that the platform will remove all AI-generated food images. Originally intended to enhance visual appeal, these images have led to complaints, breaches of trust, and lower customer ratings.
Goyal highlighted that AI-generated images have caused “a breach of trust” between customers and restaurants, resulting in increased refund requests and lower ratings. In a statement on X.com (formerly Twitter), he emphasized that Zomato strongly discourages the use of AI-generated images on menus.
To address these concerns, Zomato will begin removing AI-generated images by the end of the month. Goyal urged restaurant partners to stop using AI for marketing purposes and invest in authentic food photography, offering free photography services as part of this initiative.
Despite introducing PicNic AI last year to enhance food image quality, Zomato will now phase out the tool in favor of real food photography. However, Zomato continues to see strong financial growth, with a 74% increase in revenue and a 126% rise in net profit in Q1 FY25.
