The workers union of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has called for the removal of RS Bali, the corporation’s chairman, following a Himachal Pradesh High Court directive to shut down several loss-making HPTDC hotels. The union has urged Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to intervene in the matter.
The High Court had ordered the closure of HPTDC properties by November 25, citing low occupancy rates. However, it allowed nine of the eighteen hotels to remain operational until March 2025. While the Karamchari Sangh welcomed this partial reprieve, they expressed concerns about the potential privatization of these properties.
Union president Hukum Ram criticized the decision, stating that the court relied solely on occupancy data without considering additional revenue streams like destination weddings, parties, and industry events. The union plans to appeal the decision, aiming to present a more comprehensive financial picture to the court.
The workers union has also requested an extension for the remaining nine hotels and urged the state government to provide a Rs 50 crore grant to support tourism and sustain HPTDC’s operations. They emphasized that financial assistance is critical for revitalizing the corporation and boosting the state’s tourism sector.
Court’s Decision on Hotel Operations
On Friday, Justice Ajay Mohan Goel allowed nine properties to continue operations until March 31, 2025. This ruling followed an application filed by HPTDC seeking a recall or modification of an earlier order issued on November 19. The court clarified that while it granted a partial extension, it was not altering its initial directive entirely.
HPTDC’s application highlighted the corporation’s efforts to maximize property utilization and implement measures to improve financial outcomes. The union’s appeal and the court’s response underscore the pressing challenges faced by HPTDC, emphasizing the need for strategic planning and sustained support to strengthen tourism in Himachal Pradesh while ensuring the viability of its hospitality sector.
