New Boutique Hotel Set to Open Near Ahangama on Sri Lanka’s South Coast

Trebartha East, a stunning design-led boutique hotel situated atop a 12-acre cinnamon plantation in Sri Lanka, has made waves in the hospitality industry. Owned by British entrepreneurs Patrick and Benny Latham, the hotel opened its doors in February 2023, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for Sri Lanka’s architectural heritage.

Upon acquiring the plantation in 2017, the Lathams were captivated by the untended beauty of the site, surrounded by lush hills of cinnamon, rubber, and tea plantations, as well as untamed jungle. Determined to create something truly exceptional, they embarked on a journey to revive the neglected estate.

The name “Trebartha East” pays homage to the Lathams’ residence on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The hotel’s circular design, known as The Round House, offers panoramic 360-degree views of rice paddies and jungle, providing guests with a tranquil and secluded retreat just a short tuk-tuk ride away from the vibrant coastal town of Ahangama.

Inside The Round House, guests are treated to an exquisite blend of local craftsmanship and modern design. All the furniture is meticulously crafted in Colombo, complemented by rattan pieces and handmade rugs created by local artisans. The art collection features works from renowned Sri Lankan artists, including Rubert Soysa and Namal Pushpa Kumara.

The hotel boasts four spacious bedrooms, each adorned with a four-poster bed and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the picturesque plantation. A beautifully designed living room serves as a gathering space for afternoon tea or evening drinks, fostering a sense of community among guests.

One of Trebartha East’s highlights is its 18-meter curved infinity pool, which completes the circular design and provides a serene oasis for relaxation after a day at the nearby beach. The hotel’s all-day kitchen delights guests with fresh and locally sourced dishes, such as tuna tartare, king prawns with passionfruit and coriander, and jackfruit arancini balls. Meals are served family-style around a communal table, allowing guests to connect with one another or enjoy more private dining experiences.

The exceptional design and architectural prowess of Trebartha East have not gone unnoticed. The hotel was recently honored with the prestigious Monsoon Architecture Award 2023 in the Leisure and Hospitality category. The award, presented by the Indian Institute of Architects, Cochin Centre, celebrates projects in the Monsoon Climatic Regions of the world.

Architect Dr. Ar. Narein Perrera was recognized for his innovative vision in lifting the building to create a floating effect above the hill. This design choice allows the natural landscape to continue thriving while providing guests with unobstructed views. The circular form of The Round House captivates viewers, and the delicate balance between the structure and its surroundings gives the impression of butterflies softly perched on the existing landscape.

Trebartha East stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of design, natural beauty, and cultural appreciation. As word spreads about this hidden gem, travelers seeking a tranquil and luxurious escape are sure to make their way to the captivating hills of Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
