Initial Phase to Cover Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam Stations, Plans Expansion to 59 More Cities
Food delivery platform Swiggy has announced a collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp (IRCTC) to provide pre-ordered meals to travelers at four major railway stations across India, mirroring a similar initiative by competitor Zomato. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Swiggy will kick off meal deliveries from its extensive restaurant network to passengers aboard select trains, starting with stations in Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, and Vijayawada. The service is set to expand to an additional 59 stations nationwide in the coming weeks.
In a statement, Swiggy highlighted the challenge faced by travelers on long journeys due to limited culinary options and expressed its commitment to enhancing the travel experience by offering quality, warm meals delivered directly to passengers’ seats.
Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Food Marketplace at Swiggy, described the partnership as an exploratory endeavor aimed at enriching consumer experiences with diverse food choices. Regarding the integration with Swiggy Instamart, the company’s quick commerce service, Kapoor acknowledged the idea’s interest but stated it hadn’t been fully considered yet.
Passengers interested in utilizing Swiggy’s food delivery service can input their PNR on the IRCTC app and select their desired station for meal delivery. Swiggy boasts a network of over 280,000 restaurant partners across numerous cities, with its Instamart grocery service operating in over 25 cities.
Kapoor expressed optimism about the initiative’s reception among passengers and restaurant operators along these routes, indicating a potential expansion to more stations and routes in the future. In fiscal year 2023, IRCTC reported revenues of INR 3,541.47 crore, with a net profit of INR 1,005.88 crore.
