The iconic Taj Gateway Hotel in Visakhapatnam, a landmark on Beach Road with a legacy spanning nearly 45 years, is set to close by the end of November. The property, owned by Oriental Hotels Limited (OHL) under the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) brand, will cease operations as its lease with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) comes to an end.
Known for its stunning views of the Bay of Bengal and renowned hospitality, Taj Gateway has been a favorite among locals and tourists alike, attracting generations of visitors for its elegance and prime location. The decision to close the hotel has saddened many in the Vizag community, who see it as the end of an era.
OHL and IHCL have yet to announce any immediate plans for a new location in the city, leaving many to wonder if and when another Taj property might reappear in Visakhapatnam. As the lease concludes, the hotel will wind down its operations by November 30, marking a nostalgic farewell to a beloved Vizag institution.
Acquired by Varun Group from Oriental Hotels in 2018, the property will undergo a transformation into a mixed-use development, featuring a new hotel, luxury apartments, and office spaces with an investment of around INR 600 crore. Residents have shared fond memories of the hotel’s food festivals and scenic views as the property prepares for its next chapter.
