Indian Malt Whisky Association has introduced a Certification Trademark for Indian single malt whiskies, creating the country’s first industry-backed authenticity framework aimed at standardising production practices and strengthening consumer confidence in one of the fastest-growing premium spirits categories.
The new certification will be issued as a secure hologram affixed to qualifying bottles, providing consumers with a visible assurance that the product meets stringent production and quality standards established by the association.
Under the framework, only whiskies produced entirely in India using 100% malted barley will be eligible for certification. The standards mandate production at a single distillery, distillation in copper pot stills, maturation for a minimum of three years in oak casks not exceeding 700 litres, and prohibit the use of molasses, neutral spirits, or external flavouring agents.
According to Rajesh Chopra, the certification mark is designed to create a credible and industry-owned validation mechanism as Indian single malts continue to gain prominence in domestic and international markets. He said the initiative establishes a common benchmark for authenticity, production integrity and consumer trust across the category.
The move comes amid surging global demand for Indian single malts, which have increasingly earned recognition for their distinctive flavour profiles shaped by India’s unique climate and terroir. Industry stakeholders believe the certification will reduce ambiguity around product definitions, improve transparency and support informed purchasing decisions.
Beyond the domestic market, the initiative is expected to enhance India’s standing in the global premium whisky segment by aligning local production practices with internationally recognised standards. The certification framework is also seen as a catalyst for export growth, strengthening the credibility and competitiveness of Indian single malt brands in key overseas markets.
With the launch of the authenticity mark, IMWA aims to create a more structured and globally recognised ecosystem for Indian single malts, positioning the category for sustained growth and stronger international acceptance.
