The Kerala government has amended its liquor policy to allow alcohol service in star-rated hotels on the first day of every month, easing the blanket dry day rule. The move is aimed at supporting MICE events and destination weddings in the state.
Under the revised Kerala Foreign Liquor Rules, the exemption will take effect from August 1, subject to approval from the Excise Commissioner. However, the exemption will not apply if the first day of the month coincides with any other government-declared dry day.
The new rule covers three-star and above hotels, including heritage and boutique properties, many of which are situated in Kerala’s coastal and hill regions.
Hotels seeking the exemption must apply at least seven days in advance, providing details of the event. A one-day licence will cost ₹50,000, and liquor can only be served during the approved function. Even hotels without existing bar licences can apply for the single-day permit.
The change follows industry feedback that the existing dry day restriction was affecting tourism-focused segments, particularly conferences and weddings.
