India’s travel and hospitality sector is witnessing a major shift as Millennials and Gen Z increasingly opt for heritage luxury and premium staycations. A new survey by Noormahal Palace, Karnal, reveals that 53% of respondents aged 18–34 chose heritage properties over other options in the past year, highlighting a growing preference for immersive cultural experiences over conventional luxury.
The survey, conducted among 2,000 young travellers across Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Karnal, and Kolkata, underscores how authenticity, history, and exclusivity are reshaping vacation choices. Respondents cited unique architecture, rich heritage, and personalised service as their top priorities, placing cultural immersion above traditional leisure-focused stays.
Interestingly, 28% of participants emphasised the importance of Instagrammable, story-worthy experiences, underlining how social media continues to influence travel decisions. Moreover, 19% noted that a property’s heritage story plays a critical role in destination selection, reflecting the generation’s desire for meaningful connections with history and tradition.
Roop Partap Choudhary, Executive Director, Noormahal Palace, commented:
“We are witnessing a remarkable evolution in the preferences of young travellers. Millennials and Gen Z want more than just luxury—they value authenticity, culture, and heritage. At Noormahal Palace, we aim to deliver an experience that blends history with modern comfort, giving guests an opportunity to live India’s legacy while enjoying world-class amenities.”
The findings highlight a broader trend of heritage luxury redefining India’s hospitality sector, as hotels that promote cultural preservation and authenticity gain traction among the country’s largest travelling cohorts. This generational demand is expected to drive new opportunities for heritage hotels, boutique stays, and premium hospitality brands focused on curating experiences rather than just accommodations.
