In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training (DECT), Government of Meghalaya, organised a consultation on industrial engagement for ITI internships and placements in catering and hospitality trades under the Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya – Phase II (SHCDM-II) project.
The programme placed Meghalaya’s youth at the centre of discussions, highlighting their role in shaping the state’s future workforce. A key attraction was a live culinary showcase by ITI trainees before hoteliers, underscoring both their skills and the need to connect training with industry opportunities.
The event brought together DECT officials, SHCDM-II project members, representatives from the tourism department of East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills, and leading hotels, creating a platform for dialogue between training institutions and industry leaders.
Discussions focused on establishing a structured placement pathway for ITI graduates in the tourism and hospitality sector. The DECT said the effort is part of broader initiatives under SHCDM-II, which include:

Construction of new hostels across ITIs to improve access and retention.

Introduction of industry-relevant trades aligned with emerging economic needs.

Launch of a hybrid job marketplace, supporting both formal employment and gig-style opportunities for ITI trainees.
“These measures reflect the State’s commitment to building a stronger, inclusive skilling ecosystem—where Meghalaya’s youth are not only trained but also meaningfully employed to drive the State’s growth story,” the DECT said in a statement.
