Maharashtra Government Cancels Foreign Tours of Tourism Department
Maharashtra has cancelled all proposed foreign tours of the state tourism department and affiliated delegations with immediate effect as part of measures aimed at conserving fuel and protecting foreign exchange reserves.
The decision was announced by Shambhuraj Desai, who said the move follows an appeal by Narendra Modi and directions issued by Devendra Fadnavis.
According to officials, an order has already been issued to the tourism department’s Additional Chief Secretary regarding the immediate cancellation of all planned international visits involving tourism department officials and associated delegations.
The Maharashtra tourism department has also appealed to citizens to prioritise domestic tourism over international travel in an effort to support the local economy, conserve foreign exchange, and reduce fuel and energy consumption.
The move comes amid increasing emphasis on sustainable resource management and domestic economic strengthening, with state authorities encouraging travelers to explore destinations within India while contributing to regional tourism growth.
Industry observers note that domestic tourism continues to play a significant role in supporting local hospitality businesses, transport networks, and employment generation across multiple Indian states.
