From being a relatively small contributor to the company’s global business a decade ago, India has emerged as one of TOTO’s top six markets worldwide. With its manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat, serving both domestic and international demand, the company is now targeting threefold growth by 2030. In an exclusive interaction with Asmita Mukherjee, Shiozawa Kazuyuki, Managing Director of Japanese sanitary-ware major TOTO India discusses how India is becoming increasingly important to the company’s global growth ambitions.
How strategic is India to TOTO’s global growth plans?
India is an increasingly important contributor to our global growth story and a key market for the company, supported by its growing economy, large young population and significant long-term market potential. Over the past few years, we have seen remarkable growth in our electronic bidet seat products, including NEOREST and WASHLET, reflecting growing awareness and acceptance of Japanese sanitaryware technology, innovation and product offerings among Indian consumers.
From being virtually absent from TOTO’s global performance landscape a decade ago, India has now emerged as one of our top six markets globally. India also plays an important role in supporting both domestic and export demand, with our manufacturing capabilities enabling us to supply advanced, water-efficient products to international markets, including Europe and Japan.
We are targeting threefold growth by 2030. Our strategy will focus on expanding the sales network, broadening the product range across different price points without diluting our premium quality positioning, and introducing new offerings in the coming years. Considering the size and potential of the Indian market, we believe India can make an even greater contribution to our global business in the future.
Are there plans to expand manufacturing or increase local sourcing in India?
Our Halol manufacturing facility in Gujarat plays a strategic role in TOTO India’s operations. It is currently operating at a high level of capacity utilisation, supported by growing demand from both domestic and export markets. The facility enables us to manufacture technologically advanced, water-efficient sanitaryware solutions while efficiently catering to both the Indian and international markets. Our current focus is on optimising existing operations, maintaining global quality standards, and driving future growth through operational excellence and continuous process improvements.
At present, we do not have immediate plans to expand our manufacturing capacity in India, as our priority remains maximising the efficiency and capabilities of our existing Halol facility.
How does TOTO ensure consistent global quality standards in India?
At our Halol manufacturing facility, we follow best practices and adhere to global and international standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, MIS, TIS, IAPMO and JIS, along with a safety-first approach. Since beginning operations in 2014 the facility has evolved from manufacturing basic products when operations began in 2014 to producing premium products suitable for India and international markets, including Europe, the US and Japan. We are also proud to have one of the cleanest TOTO plants globally.
Our skilled workforce in India is trained by Japanese experts, helping us maintain TOTO’s global quality and operational standards. We also have service teams across regions, supported by trained staff to provide prompt and consistent after-sales service.
