According to TOI, after mahua got ‘heritage liquor’ tag, the Madhya Pradesh government has cleared the decks for it to be served in bars and hotels owned by MP tourism corporation. The move is aimed at empowering the local tribal as mahua will be brewed locally.
The state government also plans to take it to other states and even to the foreign lands. Some time back, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced ‘heritage liquor’ tag for mahua.
The mahua will be produced in tribal dominated districts of Alirajpur and Dindori by two self-help groups.
The local residents in Alirajpur have suggested the brand name ‘Mond’ and a final decision on it will be taken by the government, said Excise Commissioner Rajeev Chandra Dubey.
The mahua will be served in 18 MP Tourism bars and hotels as part of a pilot project. The mahua will be produced based on demand and there has been no set target.
Government will take a call on opening sale counters depending on the response. It is for the first time that mahua has been produced professionally. Officials said the mahua manufacture will be followed by research conducted by Vasant Dada Sugar Institute in Maharashtra’s Pune.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh government will help in setting up mahua manufacturing units in the two districts.
