The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Ranchi has secured copyright registration for its scientifically documented work on ‘Madua Laddoo’, marking a significant step in integrating indigenous culinary knowledge with hospitality research, innovation and intellectual property.
The Copyright Office, Government of India, registered the work under the Copyright Act, 1957, with the application filed on May 16, 2026, and the registration certificate issued on July 22, 2026.
Developed jointly by Dr. Bhupesh Kumar, Principal, Ravi Kumar, Senior Lecturer, and Rajnish Kumar Singh, Lecturer, the work standardises the preparation of the traditional millet-based sweet widely consumed across Jharkhand. The documentation aims to preserve the recipe while introducing scientific consistency, quality control and commercial applicability.
The institute said the initiative reflects its broader strategy of integrating indigenous grains, tribal culinary traditions and community knowledge into hospitality education, research and product development.
Madua, also known as ragi or finger millet, is recognised for its nutritional value and climate resilience. IHM Ranchi believes scientific documentation of millet-based products can create opportunities in nutrition, entrepreneurship, value-added food products and rural livelihoods while preserving regional culinary heritage.
Commenting on the development, Dr. Bhupesh Kumar said the copyright registration reinforces the role of hospitality education in research, innovation and intellectual property creation. He added that the institute encourages students and faculty to recognise the research potential of traditional culinary practices and local food knowledge.
The institute recently received recognition as a Host Institute under the Ministry of MSME and is participating in MSME Hackathon 6.0. It said the latest copyright registration will further strengthen its research ecosystem and support future initiatives in food innovation, entrepreneurship and start-up development.
