The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has announced a INR 5 crore investment to restore Chotelal Ki Ghat, one of Kolkata’s oldest riverfront landmarks. The initiative, taken up in partnership with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and supported by INTACH, aligns with the government’s Namami Gange and Swachhata programs.
Built in the 1870s, the Grade I heritage site will undergo structural conservation, landscaping, and beautification, with contributions from local artists for wall and boat paintings. IHCL said the project will be completed over three years and aims to strengthen the ghat’s cultural significance while enhancing its role as a public and tourist destination.
“Chotelal Ki Ghat holds deep historical and cultural significance for West Bengal. Through our ESG+ framework Paathya, IHCL is committed to conserving heritage while driving meaningful community impact,” said Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President – Human Resources, IHCL.
Rathendra Raman, Chairman of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, added, “The renovation of Chotelal Ki Ghat will restore its essence while enhancing its public appeal. This partnership reflects our shared vision of sustainable development and heritage preservation.”
IHCL’s commitment builds on its track record of heritage conservation across India, while reinforcing Kolkata’s riverfront revival. The project is expected to benefit local vendors, artists, residents, and the wider community.
