Two foreign nationals die at Conrad Bengaluru; police investigate circumstances surrounding incident
Two foreign nationals died following an incident at the swimming pool of Conrad Bengaluru on Friday evening, October 30, while two others, including a hotel employee, were injured during rescue efforts. The incident has brought swimming pool safety and emergency response protocols at hotels under scrutiny.
The deceased have been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national and Lufthansa crew member, and Juraj Horvat, 45, a Slovakian national employed with IBM. A US national, Mathew Desantis, 41, and pool attendant Rahul Tiwari, 28, were injured while attempting to rescue the two men. Both were reported to be stable.
The incident occurred at the swimming pool on the third floor of the hotel. According to a police complaint filed by the German national’s wife, the two men reportedly suffered electric shocks while attempting to exit the pool and subsequently drowned. The complaint has alleged negligence on the part of the hotel management in maintaining the swimming pool.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The precise cause has not yet been established.
In a statement, Conrad Bengaluru said the cause of the incident was yet to be determined and would be subject to a comprehensive investigation. The hotel said it was cooperating with the authorities.
The swimming pool was subsequently marked closed for maintenance, with a notice indicating closure from October 31 to November 30.
The incident raises questions about electrical safety, preventive maintenance and emergency response systems at hotel swimming facilities. Swimming pools involve multiple electrical installations and equipment, including underwater lighting and filtration systems, making regular inspections and maintenance critical to guest safety.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the incident and determine whether any safety or maintenance lapses occurred.
