A devastating fire at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora, Goa, has resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people, prompting renewed scrutiny of safety compliance across India’s hospitality and nightlife industry. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, with police confirming the first emergency call at 12:04 am.
According to preliminary reports, the fire was triggered by a cylinder blast, rapidly engulfing the premises. Most victims reportedly succumbed to suffocation, while three individuals sustained fatal burn injuries. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who inspected the site in the early hours, stated that the establishment had violated key fire-safety norms—a recurring concern in India’s growing F&B and nightlife ecosystem.
The CM also confirmed that most casualties were kitchen staff, including three women employees, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of back-of-house teams who often operate in compact, high-risk environments within hospitality establishments.
The Prime Minister’s Office has announced an ex-gratia of INR2 lakh for families of the deceased and INR50,000 for the injured under the PMNRF. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and assured full central support to state authorities.
