The iconic Hotel Oakwood in Juhu has been named among five properties listed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for potential auction over alleged property tax dues amounting to more than INR 27 crore.
Hotel Oakwood’s management has expressed concern over being grouped with chronic defaulters, stating that the property has been under financial strain due to prolonged downturns in the hospitality sector. “The past few years have been exceptionally challenging for the hotel industry. While we respect the BMC’s procedures, we are engaging with the authorities to resolve the matter and avoid any disruption to operations,” a spokesperson said.
The BMC’s notice gives property owners 21 days to clear outstanding amounts before initiating auction proceedings. Oakwood’s management confirmed that discussions are underway to explore structured payment solutions and prevent the landmark property from being auctioned.
Industry observers warn that distress sales of established hotels could impact investor confidence in Mumbai’s hospitality sector. Oakwood, a long-standing player in Juhu’s hotel market, emphasized its commitment to guests, staff, and business continuity while working toward an amicable settlement with civic authorities.
