Star-rated hotels across Kolkata are reporting near-total occupancy for the next 20 days, driven by the T20 World Cup matches, peak wedding season demand and a packed calendar of business conferences and cultural events.
The city, which has approximately 7,500 rooms across five- and four-star categories and 157 banquet halls with a combined capacity of around 30,000 guests, is witnessing one of its strongest hospitality cycles in recent years. Industry stakeholders indicate that most premium hotel rooms and banquet spaces are booked through February and well into March.
The ongoing cricket tournament has significantly boosted inbound travel, with Kolkata hosting multiple World Cup fixtures. Simultaneously, the wedding season has resumed after a nearly two-month pause, leading to intense demand for banquet venues and residential wedding bookings. Large-scale meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), alongside international sporting and literary events, have further tightened availability.
According to industry leaders, the hospitality calendar over the coming weeks includes major corporate conferences, residential weddings, an international chess tournament and a literary gathering, in addition to regular foreign leisure travel typical for this time of year.
Premium hotel chains operating in the city — including properties under the Taj Group such as Taj Bengal, Taj City Centre and Vivanta Kolkata EM Bypass — are reporting multiple sold-out dates this month.
At ITC Royal Bengal and ITC Sonar, demand has remained exceptionally strong, with all major wedding dates fully booked and several large residential conferences scheduled.
Hyatt Regency Kolkata and boutique properties such as Sonet Hotel are also reporting high occupancy levels, with multiple sold-out days through February and into early March.
Industry estimates indicate that while several dates in January were already operating at full capacity, February occupancy levels are averaging between 80% and 100% across premium segments. Some properties report full bookings through the first half of February and occupancy levels exceeding 85% through mid-March.
The surge in demand has led to a noticeable rise in room tariffs, with corporate travelers reporting higher-than-usual rates due to limited availability. Market observers note that rate corrections are typical during high-demand cycles, particularly when sporting events, weddings and MICE activity converge.
Hospitality industry representatives describe the current phase as an unprecedented demand spike for Kolkata, with strong inbound tourist flow expected to sustain high occupancy levels through the end of March.
The current surge underscores Kolkata’s growing position as a key eastern hub for sports tourism, destination weddings and large-format business events, reinforcing the city’s premium hospitality capacity amid constrained supply.
