Commercial cylinders up across metros; jet fuel costs surge
Fuel prices saw a sharp upward revision from April 1, with commercial LPG cylinders and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) witnessing significant increases across major cities, reflecting global energy market pressures.
LPG prices climb
In New Delhi, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has risen by ₹195.50 to ₹2,078.50, while the 5-kg cylinder now costs ₹549, up by ₹51. A similar upward trend was observed in Kolkata, where prices increased by ₹218.
However, domestic LPG prices remain unchanged at ₹913 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, offering some relief to household consumers.
ATF rates surge
Aviation turbine fuel prices have also been revised upward sharply across metros. ATF in Delhi now stands at ₹2.07 lakh per kilolitre, while Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai have recorded similarly elevated levels.
The increase is expected to impact airline operating costs and could eventually translate into higher airfares.
Global triggers
The price revisions come amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly involving the US, Israel and Iran, which have disrupted crude supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Rising global crude oil prices have directly fed into domestic fuel costs.
Supply remains stable
Despite the price hike, the government has assured that fuel supplies across the country remain stable, with adequate stock levels and refineries operating at high capacity. Authorities have also urged consumers to avoid panic buying.
