Three picturesque villages in Sikkim—Pastenga, Chalamthang, and Pacheykhani—are set to become homestay hubs under a government initiative aimed at boosting rural tourism and empowering local communities. The project will focus on training villagers in specialized skills, including hospitality management, culinary arts, and sustainable tourism practices.
Sikkim’s Tourism Department, in collaboration with the North East Rural Livelihood Project, will spearhead the transformation. Selected residents will receive training on how to run professional homestays, ensuring guests experience both comfort and authentic local culture. Training will include courses on housekeeping, traditional Sikkimese cooking, and sustainable waste management to enhance the villages’ appeal to eco-conscious travelers.
The initiative also aims to preserve the villages’ unique heritage while providing additional income streams for locals. Each homestay will highlight traditional Sikkimese architecture, local crafts, and organic cuisine, creating a holistic cultural experience for visitors.
State officials emphasized that this move not only aligns with Sikkim’s sustainable tourism goals but also fosters socio-economic growth by creating employment opportunities in rural areas. The project is expected to draw domestic and international tourists, further bolstering the region’s reputation as a premier destination for eco-tourism and cultural immersion.
