Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, Coorg is advancing its sustainability journey through a series of biodiversity-focused initiatives aligned with Paathya, the ESG+ framework of Indian Hotels Company Limited(IHCL). The framework integrates environmental stewardship, community engagement and responsible operations across IHCL’s portfolio, with Taj Madikeri emerging as a flagship example of its on-ground implementation.
Set within a 180-acre rainforest landscape in Coorg, the resort was developed over seven years with a low-impact approach, utilising only 30 acres for built infrastructure and preserving existing tree cover. Construction incorporated compressed stabilised earth blocks made on-site from displaced soil and sun-dried to minimise emissions, resulting in a near-zero construction footprint. The natural contours of the land were retained, while excavated soil was repurposed to create a freshwater lake that supports aquatic biodiversity, migratory birds and rainwater harvesting.
The ecological approach has enabled the property to sustain rich biodiversity, including 310 species of birds, 68 species of butterflies, 79 species of mammals and 32 species of frogs. With an Air Quality Index consistently below 3 and a plastic-free environment, the resort positions environmental integrity at the centre of the guest experience.
A dedicated Batracharium, developed after documenting frog species on the estate, provides educational insight into the region’s amphibian life under the guidance of an in-house naturalist. The resort also runs a Biodiversity Photography Club to encourage guests and associates to document and engage with its natural surroundings. Additional initiatives include guided forest walks, a Butterfly Park, honey cultivation through 32 active bee colonies, pottery sessions using natural materials and a heritage conservatory that highlights Kodava culture.
Operational sustainability measures include naturally ventilated public spaces, maximised daylight usage, LED lighting and low-wattage outdoor illumination designed to minimise disruption to nocturnal fauna. All wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation and flushing, while more than 84% of the resort’s electricity consumption over the past two years has been sourced from wind energy.
The property has also transitioned to electric mobility across the estate, replacing petrol vehicles with Tata Punch EVs after terrain-specific trials. The move reduces emissions and noise levels, limiting disturbance to wildlife. Enhanced safety features have been incorporated to improve accessibility, particularly for elderly guests.
On the community front, over 31% of the resort’s workforce is drawn from neighbouring villages, contributing to local employment and skill development. Collaboration with regional artisans and producers further extends economic benefits to the surrounding community.
Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa is a recipient of the EarthCheck Gold Certification, underscoring its continued focus on responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
