On a busy stretch of Old Mahabalipuram Road, in the heart of Chennai’s IT corridor, stands a luxury address with a unique and historic distinction. Taj Wellington Mews, Chennai, is South Asia’s first luxury service residence managed entirely by women.
“It really is a remarkable milestone,” says Kaur, the ‘First Lady’ of this groundbreaking property. “The vision wasn’t just to create a luxury service residence but to redefine leadership, inclusivity, and opportunity through women’s empowerment.”
Every role at the 112-key property, from security and engineering to culinary and front office, is filled by women. “Having an all-women team has brought an exceptional warmth and attentiveness to our service philosophy. The empathy and professionalism our team brings to each interaction has enhanced the guest experience in a truly distinctive way. Since its inception, the journey has been one of inspiration, transformation and pride. We continue to learn, grow and lead by example, proving that when women lead, excellence follows.”For Kaur, this accomplishment goes beyond simply staffing. It’s about creating an ecosystem that offers meaningful career growth within IHCL and inspires the broader community.
Kaur’s journey to this position reads like a travelogue through the Taj brand’s most iconic properties. At Taj City Centre Gurugram, she led housekeeping operations and earned the title of Best Housekeeper 2023. At the grand Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad, she preserved historic interiors while improving guest experiences. Her time at Taj West End, Bengaluru, and Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives, provided her with valuable experience in heritage hospitality and luxury resort operations.
“One of the biggest influences on my journey has been the privilege of working with inspiring leaders. Teams under them became more passionate and started performing from the heart, not because they were told to, but because they wanted to.”
“These experiences collectively prepared me to lead Taj Wellington Mews, Chennai. As I grow as a leader myself, I aspire to carry that same energy forward – to lead by action, to inspire, and to create that same ripple of positivity and passion in every team I am privileged to work with,” she says.
However, the all-women model faced challenges. “One of the biggest hurdles was breaking long-standing stereotypes about roles that traditionally weren’t associated with women, particularly in security and engineering,” Kaur explains. The solution involved finding the right talent, building confidence, and providing the training and tools necessary for success.
The hotel also emphasised flexibility and mentorship, understanding the unique demands many women face. “Through ongoing training, leadership development initiatives and a workplace built on mutual respect, we have created an environment where women can grow, lead and excel. We are proud to be setting a new benchmark in the industry and are committed to encouraging more women to step into leadership and reshape the narrative in hospitality.”
Since the pandemic, luxury service residences have seen increased demand, and Chennai, a blend of business hub and cultural destination, is no exception. “In a city like Chennai, which serves as both a business and cultural hub, RevPAR and occupancy have shown steady growth over the last few years post pandemic. What’s driving this demand is a confluence of factors. The return of corporate travel, long-stay projectassignments and a growing preference for privacy and personalization have all contributed to the uptick. Guests are no longer looking for just a place to stay, they are seeking residences that offer comfort, flexibility and intuitive service, with the added benefits of luxury hospitality,” Kaur says. The revival of corporate travel, long-term project assignments, and a growing preference for privacy and personalised service have been key drivers.
The Taj Wellington Mews offers spacious residences, curated dining, the J Wellness Spa, the Niu & Nau salon, and other amenities with the warmth of an all-women team. According to Kaur, that layer of warmth and attentiveness makes extended stays more memorable.
Kaur informed that she has noticed a noticeable shift in guest profiles for 2025. “We are seeing a clear increase in the ‘bleisure’ traveler—those combining business with leisure—along with higher demand for long-stay luxury and wellness-focused experiences,” she says. Technology is now essential for service delivery. “We are using insights to create highly personalised touchpoints, whether it’s curated dining preferences, wellness routines, or in-room experiences.” The goal is to respond to changing guest needs in real time while maintaining the brand’s signature elegance.
If the guest experience feels particularly personal here, Kaur credits the team’s dynamic. “Having an all-women-led team has undeniably brought a unique and refreshing touch, creating an atmosphere of warmth, attentiveness, and thoughtful hospitality.” Internally, there’s a sense of collective ownership and pride, along with a seamless ability to collaborate under pressure. Many guests, she notes, are inspired by the initiative itself, recognising it as an example for the hospitality industry. When you empower women, it not only changes the workplace but also enhances the entire guest experience.
IHCL has made structured mentorship and leadership development central to its inclusivity efforts. “One of the most effective ways we have achieved this is through structured mentorship and sponsorship programs tailored to support women in operational and strategic roles,” Kaur says. At Taj Wellington Mews, this approach is multi-tiered: entry-level women receive mentorship to start their careers, mid-level managers are prepared for senior roles, and senior leaders have opportunities to expand their influence.
“It’s about creating a culture where inclusion is not just an initiative but a mindset,” she stresses.
Despite progress, Kaur is honest about the work still needed. “The hospitality industry has made meaningful strides, but there’s still work to be done, especially regarding leadership in core operational roles.” She advocates for identifying high-potential women early, providing equal access to cross-functional experiences, and challenging unconscious biases. Work-life integration is crucial for retaining women and supporting their growth into senior roles.
“At Taj Wellington Mews, we have seen how women excel across departments when given the right opportunities and support,” she says.
Now in its fourth year, the property has no immediate renovation plans but is focused on improving service. “My vision for Taj Wellington Mews, Chennai is very clear – to make it a benchmark for personalised luxury and inclusive culture, where every guest and colleague feels a genuine sense of belonging. We want the hotel to be known not just for exceptional service, but also for the energy and authenticity of the team that delivers it.
Being South Asia’s first women-led hotel, we also see ourselves as a catalyst for change. I believe women bring a unique dimension to leadership – empathy, collaboration and resilience – and hospitality needs much more of that. My aspiration is that what we are building here becomes a model for the industry, proving that gender-balanced leadership creates stronger organisations and richer guest experiences.
We are still a relatively young property with a beautiful state-of-the-art product, now in our fourth year of operations. At this stage, there are no renovation plans on the table, but our focus is firmly on service innovations and continuous enhancements. The goal is to ensure that Taj Wellington Mews, Chennai continues to remain a warm, stylish, future-ready address for our guests,” Kaur says. As South Asia’s first women-led hotel, she wants the property to serve as a catalyst for change, showing that gender-balanced leadership strengthens organisations and enriches guest experiences.
Her long-term goal is clear: “Hospitality needs more empathy, collaboration, and resilience—and women bring that in abundance.”
