The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set for a transformative tourism overhaul, according to Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar. Key initiatives include four five-star resorts, a yacht marina, and heritage circuits aimed at boosting luxury and cultural tourism.
Speaking to PTI, Kumar outlined plans for eco-tourism, water sports, and astro-tourism. “With 836 islands blending natural beauty and history, we aim to elevate Andaman to global tourism standards,” he said. A dedicated yacht marina is also in progress to attract luxury cruises and private yachts.
The administration seeks UNESCO World Heritage status for Cellular Jail and is developing a circuit connecting historical landmarks like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island. Additionally, water sports like scuba diving and game fishing are being expanded with professional oversight.
Tourism has surged, with 7,10,397 domestic and 11,497 foreign visitors in 2024. Operators predict a further 25% growth this year, driven by infrastructure upgrades and promotional campaigns. Kumar emphasized skill development for locals to sustain tourism-driven growth.
The comprehensive plan positions the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a global hotspot for eco-adventure, luxury, and heritage tourism.
