Hotels, restaurants, and catering establishments across Bengaluru are facing mounting operational pressures following the latest increase of ₹46 in commercial LPG cylinder prices, effective June 1. Despite the rising fuel costs, industry representatives have clarified that customers are unlikely to see an immediate increase in menu prices.
The hospitality sector has been grappling with steadily rising commercial LPG rates over the past several months, significantly impacting operating expenses. Industry leaders say businesses are currently absorbing the additional burden rather than passing it on to consumers.
Veerendra Kamath, Secretary of the Bangalore Hotels Association, noted that while commercial LPG prices typically fluctuate every month, the cumulative increase has become a major concern for the sector.
“Commercial LPG prices generally vary by around ₹40 at the beginning of each month. However, the sustained increase witnessed over recent months has added considerable pressure on hotel operations,” he said.
Echoing similar concerns, P.C. Rao, Honorary President of the association, stated that hotel operators have no immediate plans to revise menu prices despite the latest hike. He pointed out that the industry had previously resorted to price revisions only after LPG costs had increased by more than ₹900.
According to industry estimates, commercial LPG prices have risen sharply since the escalation of tensions in West Asia. The cost of a commercial cylinder has reportedly increased from approximately ₹1,845 in March to ₹3,199 currently, reflecting a cumulative rise of ₹1,354 within a relatively short period.
The sustained increase in fuel costs has added to the financial strain already being faced by restaurants and hotels due to higher food input costs, utility expenses, and overall inflationary pressures. Industry stakeholders acknowledge that escalating LPG prices have been one of the factors contributing to food price increases over the past year.
To mitigate the impact of future fuel price volatility, many hospitality businesses are exploring alternative energy solutions, including electric cooking systems and biofuel-based technologies. Industry experts believe diversifying energy sources could help reduce dependence on LPG and improve long-term operational sustainability.
While the latest LPG hike has intensified cost pressures, Bengaluru’s hospitality sector remains focused on maintaining price stability for customers, at least in the near term, as operators continue to balance rising expenses with consumer affordability.
