The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is preparing tougher regulations and penalties for companies violating food safety standards, Minister of Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan announced on May 16 at News 18’s Powering Bharat Summit.
“FSSAI monitors food products, and we aim to align with global standards. Stricter regulations are necessary to ensure companies do not misuse advertisements or take shortcuts to grow in India,” Paswan stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to consumer safety and fair practices.
In a related move, FSSAI proposed regulatory changes on May 12 targeting the sale, labelling, and licensing of dairy analogues—plant-based or synthetic products resembling traditional dairy. The draft amendments, open for public feedback until June 15, aim to curb the misleading marketing of these products as genuine dairy.
Paswan also addressed concerns over potential tariff reductions on Indian food products in international trade agreements, noting that such negotiations require careful diplomacy to safeguard domestic interests.
