Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a surge in hospitality projects in Guwahati, with 11 new five-star hotels set to transform the city. The boom follows the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit earlier this year, which attracted global hospitality brands like Marriott, Taj, Radisson, and Lemon Tree.
Sarma made the announcement on Monday while attending the Bhoomi Pujan ceremonies for two Marriott properties, including the Marriott Resort and Spa, on a 77-bigha site near Guwahati International Airport. “Guwahati is emerging as a hub for international hospitality chains, meeting the region’s growing demand for luxury accommodations,” Sarma said.
These developments aim to cater to tourists, business travelers, and destination weddings, significantly boosting the state’s tourism and hospitality sectors. Sarma emphasized that the projects, collectively valued at ₹500 crore, were fast-tracked, with construction beginning just three months after MoUs were signed.
This growth builds on Guwahati’s hospitality history, starting with the opening of its first five-star hotel, Radisson Blu, in 2014. Currently, the city boasts five luxury hotels. Sarma expressed confidence that the upcoming additions would elevate Assam’s profile as a premier destination for business and leisure, while also attracting more investments to the region.
