Himachal Pradesh is rapidly strengthening its tourism profile with a focused shift toward eco-friendly, adventure-led and year-round travel development, backed by a series of state government initiatives aimed at boosting arrivals and local employment.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state is repositioning itself beyond traditional religious tourism into a diversified destination for experiential travel. Key focus areas include water-based tourism, adventure sports, border tourism and astro-tourism.
New tourism offerings are being developed across reservoirs such as Gobind Sagar Lake, where activities like cruises, shikaras, houseboats, jet skis and water scooters have been introduced. A proposed 30-km cruise route between Harnauda in Bilaspur and Tattapani in Shimla is also planned to enhance connectivity-driven tourism experiences.
Adventure tourism is gaining momentum through international events, including the Asian Rafting Championship held on the Beas and Sutlej rivers. Bir Billing continues to be a global paragliding hub, while additional sites are being developed to expand aerial sports offerings. The Paragliding World Cup hosted in Junga further highlighted the state’s growing global visibility.
In a major sustainability push, Himachal has introduced a dedicated Eco-Tourism Policy aimed at creating employment opportunities, especially for rural youth. Border tourism has been launched at Shipki La, while astro-tourism initiatives are expanding in Lahaul-Spiti with operational stargazing facilities in Kaza.
Infrastructure development is also being accelerated, with Kangra being positioned as the state’s Tourism Capital, supported by airport expansion and heliport development. In Dehra, the ₹619-crore Durgesh Aranya Wildlife Park is under development as a major future attraction.
Additionally, the Chief Minister Tourism Start-up Scheme is supporting tourism entrepreneurs, including homestay operators, with differentiated interest subsidies across urban, rural and tribal regions. Urban infrastructure upgrades, including a ₹246-crore underground utility project in Shimla, are also aimed at improving the visitor experience.
The state government says these initiatives collectively reflect a long-term strategy to build a sustainable, investment-friendly and tourism-driven economy in Himachal Pradesh.
