Karnataka’s alco-beverage (alcobev) market is witnessing a significant shift as Millennials and Gen Z consumers increasingly favour premium, artisanal spirits over mass-market offerings. Reflecting this evolving consumption pattern, Ochre Spirits, one of India’s fastest-growing artisanal spirits companies, has announced its entry into the Karnataka market.
Industry estimates indicate that South Indian states accounted for 58% of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sales revenue in FY25, with Karnataka contributing the largest share at 17%. While overall IMFL whisky volumes grew marginally by 1.4% during the year—impacted by the general elections, changes in excise policies, and high state levies—the premium and luxury segments continued to record robust demand, underscoring a generational shift toward quality-led and experience-driven consumption.
Positioned at the centre of India’s emerging cocktail culture, Bengaluru has become a key launchpad for new-age alcobev brands focused on provenance, experimentation, and elevated on-premise experiences. Capitalising on this momentum, Ochre Spirits will introduce its core portfolio in the state, including Nutty Berry Rum, Mango Citron Rum, Peach & Cherry Vodka, and Saffron Vodka, across leading retail outlets and premium on-trade venues.
The company’s Karnataka expansion follows earlier launches in Goa, Pondicherry, and Maharashtra. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Ochre Spirits plans to establish a presence across more than 2,300 premium retail and on-trade outlets in major cities across the state. The company has set a sales target of 18,000 to 22,000 cases across its portfolio over the next two years.
Commenting on the development, John Royerr, Founder of Ochre Spirits, said, “Karnataka is among the most evolved alcobev markets in India, where consumption decisions are increasingly driven by intent, taste, and brand philosophy rather than price or habit. Millennials and Gen Z are redefining the category by prioritising authenticity, cultural relevance, and credibility. This makes Karnataka a critical market as we enter the next phase of disciplined growth.”
Ochre Spirits’ portfolio is positioned around flavour-forward, small-batch expressions aimed at adventurous consumers. The range includes Nutty Berry Rum, which combines nutty depth with berry notes; Mango Citron Rum with tropical citrus accents; Peach & Cherry Vodka known for its aromatic profile; and Saffron Vodka, offering a smooth, premium finish.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand beyond its current offerings with the launch of an agave-based spirits line and a contemporary Indian gin tailored for urban consumers. A premium, India-inspired whisky is also in the pipeline, reinforcing Ochre Spirits’ ambition to build a multi-category artisanal spirits portfolio. With its mature consumer base and trend-driven on-trade ecosystem, Karnataka is expected to play a pivotal role in the company’s long-term growth strategy.
