Pune Hotel Businesses Grapple with Police Commissioner’s Closing Regulations

Hoteliers and restaurateurs in Pune have expressed discontent with recent directives issued by the Police Commissioner, particularly concerning the strict enforcement of regulations for city establishments. Members of the United Hospitality Association (UHA) have voiced their dissatisfaction, specifically targeting the 1:30 am deadline for bar closures. They have reported instances of alleged police harassment in busy areas such as FC Road, Baner, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, Kothrud, and Karve Nagar.

Ganesh Shetty, President , Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association, said, “We comply with and support the regulations set by the Pune Police Commissioner regarding the operation hours of restaurants, eateries, etc., until 1:30 am. However, it takes time for restaurant, eatery, and hotel staff to wrap up operations after 1:30 am. Therefore, we request an additional hour for staff to complete their tasks, including having their meals. Additionally, some officers attempt to close down establishments well before the stipulated time. We have requested a meeting with the Police Commissioner to address these concerns, which is likely to take place today (21st February).”

UHA members argue that despite the mandated 1:30 am closure for bars, police frequently issue orders for establishments in these areas to shut down as early as 11 pm. Concerns have also been raised regarding the absence of official directives defining closing hours for eateries that do not serve alcohol.

Another hotel owners association plans to seek clarification from Commissioner Amitesh Kumar regarding closing times for restaurants that do not sell alcohol. The Pune police commissionerate oversees over 1,200 permit rooms, more than 10,000 family restaurants, and hotels. While there are clear operating hours for permit rooms and beer bars from 11:30 am to 1:30 am, there are no circulars or guidelines specifying hours for other establishments such as small hotels, snack centers, Chinese food eateries and family restaurants.
