Tourism stakeholders and local representatives have urged the Tamil Nadu government to reopen the long-closed TTDC Hotel in Tharangambadi. The absence of affordable lodging in this historic town discourages budget travelers from extending their stay.
Known for its Danish colonial heritage, historic churches, and the Masilamaninathar temple, Tharangambadi attracts a steady flow of visitors. However, with only high-end accommodations available, middle-income and student tourists often leave the same day, limiting tourism potential.
Built in 2000 and inaugurated by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the TTDC Hotel ceased operations in 2017 due to low revenue. Briefly leased to a private operator, the property has since remained unused.
Local officials, including Tharangambadi Town Panchayat Vice-Chairman Pon. Rajendran, emphasize that reopening the hotel would support inclusive tourism. “This would be the only affordable lodging in the area, allowing more tourists to stay overnight,” Rajendran stated.
The Tamil Nadu government allocated INR4.5 crore for the hotel’s renovation in the 2024–25 budget. Despite this, restoration work has yet to commence, leaving stakeholders eager for action to revitalise tourism in the heritage-rich town.
