Kolkata’s ongoing hotel safety crackdown has intensified, with civic authorities issuing around 200 closure notices to hotels and guest houses in six days for alleged violations of fire-safety norms and building regulations. The action follows the fatal fire at a lodge on Free School Street that claimed nine lives. The enforcement drive has also triggered a wave of voluntary shutdowns across central Kolkata, with several hotels and guest houses suspending operations without receiving closure notices. The Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) on August 21 inaugurated its 56th Annual Convention at Taj Ganges, Varanasi, bringing together hospitality leaders, policymakers and tourism stakeholders from India and abroad. The three-day convention, themed “Ananta Kashi: Leading the Future of Tourism through Spirit, Culture, Cuisine, and Craft,” is expected to draw more than 2,000 delegates. Karnataka has intensified its statewide food safety enforcement drive, with inspections conducted at 1,849 establishments and more than 2,400 food samples sent for laboratory testing, Health Minister UT Khader said. The Food Safety Division of the Department of Food Safety and Drugs Administration inspected 629 hotels serving Backward Classes communities, collecting 1,860 samples, while 331 Social Welfare Department hotels were inspected and 556 samples sent for testing. Inspections were also carried out at 889 food establishments across 186 bus stations. Notices were issued to 206 establishments over unhygienic conditions, with ₹55,000 in spot fines.
