For anyone familiar with India’s love for Indo Chinese food, the story often begins in Kolkata. The city’s historic Territi Bazar, Chinatown and its Chinese-descendant communities played a defining role in shaping the flavours that generations of Indians have grown up enjoying.
It is from these roots that Chowman, founded by Debaditya Chaudhury, emerged and went on to become one of the country’s most loved destinations for Kolkata-style Chinese cuisine. With its newest outlet in Hyderabad’s Champapet, the brand brings another slice of that legacy to the city.
The restaurant makes a pleasant first impression. Warm lighting, comfortable seating and subtle red and black oriental elements create a space that feels inviting. There is a relaxed charm to the outlet that makes it equally suited for a family dinner, a casual catch up with friends or even a quick meal after work.
The meal began with Chowman’s Favourite Soup, a signature preparation that lives up to its name. The broth combines two different soups into one flavourful blend, creating layers of taste in every spoonful. With pak choi, chicken, mushrooms and delicate egg drops adding texture and depth, the soup felt comforting and nourishing, setting the tone for what followed.
The Steamed Chicken Momos were among the highlights of the meal. Soft, juicy and neatly wrapped, they were enjoyable on their own, but the spicy house dip elevated the experience with an extra burst of flavour.
The Chicken Karaage arrived golden and crisp, with a crunchy exterior giving way to tender, succulent chicken inside. Paired with the chef’s special mayo and a squeeze of lemon, it made for an addictive appetiser.
The Asian Chilli Garlic Prawn easily stole the spotlight. Coated in a glossy chilli garlic and sriracha glaze, the prawns delivered a delicious balance of sweetness, heat and smokiness. It was one of those dishes that kept drawing diners back for another bite. The Asian Chilli Garlic Prawn and Chicken Karaage were part of Chowman’s Great Asian Food Festival, a specially curated menu featuring signature dishes inspired by the culinary traditions of Korea, Thailand, provincial China, Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The Honey Chilli Lotus Stem brought a welcome crunch to the table, while the Chicken Basil Fried Rice showcased the smoky wok-tossed flavours that have become synonymous with good Indo Chinese food.
Another standout was the Pan Fried Chilli Fish. Crispy on the outside and tender within, the fish was tossed in a sweet chilli sauce that balanced tanginess, sweetness and gentle heat beautifully. The smoky finish made it a natural companion to the fried rice.
The Butter Garlic Fish offered a softer, more comforting flavour profile. The flaky fish, coated in a rich garlic butter sauce, was simple yet satisfying and provided a nice contrast to some of the bolder dishes on the menu.
To round off the meal, the Cucumber Limeade proved refreshing and light, while the Sparkling Blueberry added a fun, fizzy touch.
What has helped Chowman become a favourite across multiple cities is its understanding of what diners truly seek from Indo Chinese cuisine. The new Champapet outlet continues that tradition, giving Hyderabad diners another dependable address for flavours that feel both nostalgic and satisfying.
