McDonald’s system failure forces restaurants closures across the world, issue resolved

Chicago-based McDonald’s faced a worldwide system failure on Friday, that led to the closure of its multiple restaurants for hours. Confirming the issue, the fast food chain called the system failure to be a ‘technology outage’ and said that the issue had been fixed. “We are aware of a technology outage, which impacted our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved,” the burger giant said in a statement. “We thank customers for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Earlier, McDonald’s in Japan posted on X, formerly Twitter, that “operations are temporarily out at many of our stores nationwide,” calling it “a system failure.” The issue came to light after hungry customers of the fast food chain faced difficulty in ordering at stores, on phones and at electronic kiosks on Friday because of a system outage. Due to the system failure, several restaurants were forced to shut for hours. In Taiwan, McDonald’s restaurants halted phone and online ordering due to system maintenance.

McDonald’s Hong Kong wrote on Facebook that its “mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks are not functioning” but later said its system was “gradually returning to normal”. The issue was also reported in South Korea, Australia, Sydney, the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand. McDonald’s restaurant chains faced technical issues in China as well. Frustrated by the halted services at McDonald’s, the outage became a hot topic among users of the social media platform Weibo. The company later said its online ordering system had been fully restored.

In the Philippines, an ongoing “system interruption” disrupted some outlets, a McDonald’s representative told AFP. Some McDonald’s in Taiwan were closed in the afternoon, displaying notices that “due to equipment failure, we are temporarily unable to operate”.
